Bachelor Of Industrial Design

A bachelor of industrial design is a tertiary course of study that will usually take 4 years to complete and will result in the awarding of a bachelor of industrial design degree. This page will look at some of the things an undergraduate will need to consider if they are looking to do an industrial design bachelors.

An industrial designer is often loosely described as a cross between an artist and a mechanical engineer. They are concerned with both form and function and the relationship between a product and it user. Without getting too fancy in respect to definitions, industrial designers are about delivering innovation in the form of a three dimensional product that can be produced in quantity. Industrial designers will do their work in unison with marketers and other engineers.

The field of industrial design is a constantly changing one because the design process needs to incorporate and reflect changes that are occurring in society and in the environment. Design can no longer simply be viewed as a professional service, but rather as a means of connecting our values and interest to a social framework. Advances in technology play a role here because they bring about consequent changes in behavior. For example a phone is no longer a device that lets you call somebody else, but a device which allows you to also send emails, play games, take pictures, store files etc. The fact that we can now process and share information more easily creates a whole new slate of design challenges – specifically industrial designers need to work out how they can best match technology to the wished and needs of users. The environment also has a large bearing on contemporary industrial design as designers now need to design products whose use will not have any adverse environmental consequences.

A Bachelor of Industrial Design program will aim to give students both an academic understanding and the practical skills required to develop concepts and apply new technologies when it comes to professional design. Classes for an industrial design bachelor’s degree will run the full course from art to communication and may include topics such as: fundamentals of design and the built environment; history of art and design; technology of design; properties of materials; design communication; and industrial design computing.
