Fashion design is a location centric profession and this applies equally to tertiary studies in fashion design. These courses tend to be staffed by industry professionals and they will often also have guest instructors from major fashion design houses. Students doing a fashion design bachelors can expect to cover coursework that will include: fashion and textile terminology; sewing and tailoring; hand drawing; computer aided design (CAD); consumer trends and behavior; fashion and art history and trends; pattern drafting and manufacturing; fashion show production and promotion; balancing of colors, proportions, textiles and moods; and human anatomy. As to the actual jobs that fashion design graduates take on, they run the course from designing itself to work at the retail level to managing a fashion house to fashion journalism. Whilst there may be a diversity of jobs in the fashion field however, you’ll find that nearly all of these jobs are concentrated in the regional fashion centers (which in the U.S. is New York or California) People looking to establish a long term career in the fashion field will need to be prepared to move to one of these centers, if they don’t live there already.
