Interior design is simply about designing the spaces in which people live and work. These spaces include offices, hotels, schools, airport terminals, theatres and private residences. I should be pointed out from the start that there is a difference between interior design and interior decoration: Interior decoration is concerned with combining color palettes with complementary furniture, artwork, lighting, flooring, and window coverings. Interior design is a more involved process with interior designers required to be knowledgeable of architectural detailing such as floor plans, home renovations and construction codes. In addition to decoration, interior designers also need to incorporate elements of product design, architecture and environmental psychology into their work. A student doing a bachelor degree in interior design can expect to learn how to apply artistic principles and techniques to the planning, designing, equipping and furnishing of residential and commercial interior spaces. The course will include instruction on the principles of interior lighting, acoustics, systems integration and color co-ordination; basic structural design; building codes and inspection regulations; computer drafting and graphic techniques; furniture and furnishings and the history of interior design and period styles. It will vary slightly from institution to institution, but you can usually expect an interior design bachelors degree to take around 3 years to complete. There is the option upon having completed a bachelors in interior design and gained some relevant work experience, to then go and do a masters of interior design. Interior design masters programs are aimed at those students who wish to achieve a higher level of specialization in this discipline. You can generally expect a masters in interior design course to take 1 year to complete if studying full time and 2 years to complete in studying part time. There are also now a number of online interior design schools. The content of the curriculum offered at on online interior design school will not be substantially different from the curriculum offered at those schools where the students are required to physically attend the campus. The advantage of an online interior design degree is that it enables you to study at times and at a place which is most convenient to you – particularly pertinent for those who are trying to juggle work and study commitments. A bachelor's degree in interior design will qualify you for a formal design apprenticeship program. After obtaining your interior design bachelors degree, you'll be eligible for an apprenticeship within a design or architecture firm to gain sufficient experience before taking the licensing exam.
